Secret Warriors Examines the Sacrifices and Heroism of Japanese Americans in WWII at History Theatre

Secret Warriors by R.A. Shiomi reminds us that the ugliness we see around us everyday, especially from our government is not new. It tells a story from a shameful moment in our country’s history, when Americans of Japanese descent were rounded up and imprisoned in camps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. That is the backdrop upon which this story is told, in the foreground are four soldiers, who despite what was happening to their families volunteered for a secret project that saved thousands of lives during the war. While we follow these four soldiers through their agreement to enroll in the program, the subsequent training, and their ultimate deployment in the Pacific theater, we are constantly aware of internment camps. The set design by Erik Paulson significantly contributes to this by having the back of the set inclosed in tall chain link fences panels with barbed wire along the top. Whenever the scene changes and wherever the action on stage is taking place, that barbed wire fence stands as a reminder of the injustice that is occuring to the characters families back home. Just as this play, masterfully directed by Lily Tung Crystal, should stand as a reminder that we’ve done all of this before and regretted it.

The four soldiers whom we follow throughout the production are played by Erik Ohno Dagoberg, Song Kim, Josh Kwon, and Clay Man Soo. The story really focuses on two of the soldiers, Tamio played by Dagoberg, and Koji played by Clay Man Soo. While they seem to clash when they first meet, Tamio being a cocky and aggressive personality compared to Koji’s more reserved demeanor, they soon become friends. Soo is good, particularly once he enters the war and uses his skills as a translator to get the enemy to surrender or talking officers of the Japanese army into providing information that will save lives on both sides. Dagoberg is electric, from the moment he comes on stage, it’s a role that requires a big personality and he delivers that but without being over the top, he’s subtly charismatic and that draws the audience into him even more. One of the things that bonds the two is they both meet and fall in love with girls at the same USO dance. Stephanie Anne Bertumen reunites with her Sanctuary City costar Soo, as Koji’s girlfriend Natsuko. While Tamio’s eventual fiance Denise Murphy is played by Kendall Kent. Bertumen and Kent’s performances are crucial to the audiences involvement in the show. The idea itself would make an interesting play to be sure. But, the romantic relationships made so heartfelt by Bertumen and Kent are key to raising our emotional involvement in the characters and raising the level of the play from interesting to compelling. Their letters from home help to build the tension and the concern for the characters raising the emotional bar of what is at stake.

Paulson’s set design in effective in Act One, with a backdrop on which Kathy Maxwell’s projections are splashed, giving us virtual locals or context to the scenes. When the audience returns from intermission for Act Two, we are astonished to see the stage transformed. Wooden structures that formed stairways on the sides of the stage have been moved to the center and combined to represent for example, a ship carrying the soldiers to the Pacific theater of the war. But the surprises do not end there, though I think I’ll keep that to myself as I was rather amazed by the transformation that occured next. Meghan Kent has designed period costuming that perfectly captures the era. Behind the scenes rounding out the overall high quality production design are Lighting Designer Wu Chen Khoo, Properties Designer Kenji Shoemaker, and Sound Designer Frederick Kennedy.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the Super Live Coming to the Orpheum Theatre April 6th!

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live is a stage show based on the original manga (japanese comic book) of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. For those not in the know, Sailor Moon was introduced in 1991 in what is now one of the most popular mangas series of all time. The characters popularity can be measured by the sheer volume of formats into which the world of Sailor Moon has been adapted. Everything from Anime series and films to video and collectible card games. For decades there have been Sailor Moon Stage shows as well, produced in Japan. Now for the first time ever they are bringing one of those shows on a 21 city North American tour which launched in Austin Texas and plays here in Minneapolis on April 6th at Hennepin Arts’ historic Orpheum Theatre, before ending the tour in NYC. Described by its producer Makoto Matsuda as “a unique genre of ‘2.5 dimensional musicals’ rather than a category such as Broadway musicals, etc.”. Expanding on that Matsuda says “it has, you know, the regular song, music, dance, technology, visuals, projections, so much more than a normal conventional musical. So we wanted to kind of honor the situation by naming it and giving it a new category name. And it’s almost kind of like a manifesto to call it a new thing. And that is our intention of calling it something, not a musical, but the super live”, explaining the impetus to create this new genre Matsuda says “I think musicals in Japan was something where the audience wasn’t necessarily young. It was more geared towards a certain demographic that was stable, but not necessarily all encompassing. But once we started doing 2.5 and we incorporated more comics and animation as an original story, their fan base came to see it much more. So we now have a robust group of young audiences that many have never been to a musical before that have been starting to come see the productions, and it has grown so much.” There may be a lesson here for American theaters to study on ways of attracting new and younger audiences by appealing to their tastes and sensibilities.

Riko Tanaka who plays Sailor Moon in the North American tour also commented on the format saying “The format of the production is actually that they have the Super Live musical, and then at the end, there is a second part, which is almost like a concert, and they play all the super classic hits from Sailor Moon. So it’s kind of a different setup and that part when you switch to the concert is really exciting. Because, you know, up to that point, they’re doing all this storytelling, which is great, but then once you switch to the concert, the beloved characters come out and do their known music.” “There’s characters like Tuxedo Mask and Queen Beryl and they have their number where they’re belting it out, and the characters, Sailor Moon and everybody are in the back enjoying it and cheering on as well. So it’s like a really fun part and I think that kind of resonates with the audience as well.”

Tanaka also talked about the what it is about the character that make fans love her so much. “The main character, Usagi, is a really charming, kind of a little clumsy, fun character that people want to just kind of reach out and help almost. And then there’s this other, Sailor Moon, which is like the fighting, really powerful, strong, enigmatic character that is like unbeatable. And that contrast between the two makes it very interesting and attractive, I think. And I feel like keeping that gap is something that makes it very interesting to people.” I asked Tanaka what it was like to take on such an iconic role? “definitely it’s been incredible to be selected and of course all my family, my relatives, everybody was like, oh my God, that’s amazing and they were very happy about it and they were celebrating it. But of course, this is a role that has been very important within this industry. So my fellow actors who understand the significance of the role have been so encouraging and they have been celebrating with me this achievement. Not only just to portray the role, the beloved Sailor Moon, for the people all over the world who love Sailor Moon, but I do it also as me, as an actor. This is going to be my main rise to fame role. So it is something that I take with such honor, and the responsibility is felt, but I’m very excited about it too.” Producer Matsuda added “So actually in Japan There is very few auditions, not as much as you think. But, that being said, every young actress in Japan wants to play Sailor Moon, so there’s a lot of people who apply. So she [Riko] is very casual about it, but this is a really big deal though that she won the Sailor Moon position”.

Tanaka remembers that her first exposure to Sailor Moon was the anime series when she was three or four years old. “It was at that age when you kind of played the character with your friends and stuff. And, actually my favorite character was Sailor Jupiter.” Choreographer for the show Satomi Toma talked about going back to the original manga’s for inspiration “Once I got involved in this production, I had the opportunity to reread the original manga. And I was so moved and impressed by like this elegant line, the beauty of how it’s being portrayed. Talking about choreography, how her hair moves, how her skirt flitters and like that sense is something that I really wanted, that sense of awe. I do want to keep in the production as well that impression that it had on me, it was very strong. There’s a color version as well, but especially the black and white version, I feel like that line is something that left an impression on me when I was looking at the original comic for the first time.”

Matsuda hopes that audiences take away three things from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the Super Live “The first message is this is also a message about peace and how there’s a lot of fighting and action, but it is about how that is a sad thing and how important it is to know how precious peace is. The second thing is the message of love. Sailor Moon is loved by generations of people. We see people, mother and daughter that come together and enjoy. Different generations that come together and they go and are very happy about it. And we want people to, you know, after seeing it, feel the sense of love doesn’t have to be certain partners or anything. It could be, I want to just call my mom and say hello, that kind of love as well. A message of love is something that is really compassion and love is something that’s important. And this is probably the most important thing. I want people to feel energized. We get energized from the feedback from the audience, the love that we receive is something that’s so contagious and we will hope that the audience feels that love and excitement and feel really fresh and energized through seeing our production as well. So those are the three things that I hope the audience could feel when they come see the super live.”

If you have someone in your life that is into mangas and anime there’s a good chance they are a fan of Sailor Moon. For me it’s my daughter Savannah who has even dressed as Sailor Moon for Halloween. A show like this is for the fans. It’s an opportunity to go experience something you love in a new way and to gather with others who share your love. I’m hoping she pulls out the costume and wears it when we attend Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the Super Live on April 6th, my birthday at the Orpheum Theatre. The Book Club Play is a Literary Blast at Lakeshore Players

The Book Club Play contains all the elements you might look for in a good book; drama, comedy, social commentary, romance. It touches on all the qualities of the books it’s characters read. But above all, it’s a comedy, one that draws much of it’s humor from the best possible well, that of character. The play is written by Karen Zacarias, whose ability to create characters that can be summed up as a type, but then refuse to be simply that character’s tagline. This is my second exposure to this play by Zacharias. The first was a couple of years back at Theater in the Round and it was a favorite, in fact my wife loved it so much she went back with a group of friends to see it again. This production was just as enjoyable and I’m thrilled to highly recommend it! This is the sort of play that I like to recommend for couples who don’t get out to the theater often or as a great night out with a group of friends. The type of show where there is no way you’re not going to leave the theatre saying “we should go to the theater more often that was really fun!”

Ana is a Type A personality who lives in a letter-perfect world with an adoring husband, the perfect job, and her greatest passion: Book Club. But when her cherished group becomes the focus of a documentary film, their intimate discussions about life and literature take a turn for the hilarious in front of the inescapable camera lens. Add a provocative new member along with some surprising new book titles, and these six friends are bound for pandemonium.”

That’s basically all you need to know of the plot because the humor and heart of the play comes from the characters and their relationships. Lakeshore players has gathered a very talented group of actors who know how to bring Zacarias complex characters to life, always avoiding making them into caricatures. With 7 actors appearing on stage and all of them so good it’s hard to choose who to highlight. What I noticed most about the ensemble was the way they genuinely seemed to be listening to each other. They were exceptionally good at showing us their character’s thoughts and feelings when the attention wasn’t on them. A great example is Mitch Kiecker’s portrayal of Rob, Ana’s husband. Ana played by Laura Knobel is frequently seeking the spotlight or the one holding court. It was fascinating to watch Kiecker at these times and how natural and in the moment he appeared at those times. If I had to choose a favorite it would either be Lewis Youngren who plays William or Katie Rowles-Perich who plays Alex. William co founded the Book Club and was Ana’s first romance and Rob’s roommate back in college. William plays him humorously immaculate, and his line reading when he makes a revelation in the second Act is uproariously funny. Rowles-Perich plays an interloper to the book club that Ana sees as a threat to her perfectly curated group of people. Rowles-Perich blows through the book club like a breath of fresh air and full of intelligent insites. Her reactions to the group in many ways mirror our own.

One of the little touches that I love about this script is these inter scenes between book club meetings where Erika Soukup performs as different characters giving testimonials. Director Jess Yates stages these brief little bits cleverly, even having one of them off to the side on a wall above some of the audience. Sarah Brandner’s set design is perfectly suited to the play with the audience placed where the Documentary’s camera would be. The World is Burning So I Made Smores One of the Funniest Shows Yet at The Brave New Workshop

If you’ve never been to the Brave New Workshop (BNW) for one of their sketch comedy shows, The World is Burning So I Made Smores is the perfect show to take the plunge with. The humor is topical but perfectly MAGA friendly; no seriously, if you are a Trump supporter don’t have any qualms about attending this show, none of your wrongly held believes will be questioned or joked about even in the slightest, sincerely. In fact, what a perfect way for liberals to extend an olive branch to their former MAGA friends, invite them to this light comedy show that looks for the silver lining in today’s overcast days. I can’t think of a more enjoyable way to thank all those who voted for Trump than to take them to this show and watch their responses. You know that uncle of yours who’s always going on about the transgender mafia’s attempts to take over the WMBA? You know the one you faked having Covid so you wouldn’t have to see him at Thanksgiving and Christmas? Yeah, bring him and Aunt Karen to this show, they’ll just eat it up, trust me.

Like all of the BNW shows telling much about it can only lessen your enjoyment. I will say that there seemed to be more musical numbers than usual, all of which are very funny. The cast is great as always, missing from this show is longtime performer Doug Neithercott, but who we do get are fantastic. Without saying too much, here are some favorite bits. Dora the Explorer played by Isabella Dunsieth. Katy McEwen as a sportscaster interviewing Donald Trump, played by Jeffrey Nolan, about his draft day cabinet picks. Lauren Anderson as a mother explaining to her daughter that grown ups don’t know what to do either. Denzel Belin as Captain America and his run in with Captin’ Merica. And one of my favorite portions of the night was Act III which was all improv, which of course means it will be different every night based on audience suggestions.

The Messenger is Scarily Relevant, Attendance Should be Required at Six Points Theater

The Messenger a new play by Jenny Connell Davis is a powerful and important work that needs to be seen by as many people as possible. Told from the perspective of four women in different time periods The Messenger explores the reality of hate and how it endures. Their gender of the characters is in and of itself an important choice Davis makes. We hear these four testimonials play out and while it is being produced at Six Points and three of the four stories do revolve around the holocaust in some way, it is not a play simply about anti semitism. It is about how hate of any kind is given power, how well intentioned or fearful people become complicit in it’s growth. Davis has the Woman tell us their stories directly because hearing facts is less impactful than hearing someone’s personal story. Facts often leave our minds leaving behind vague impressions of a general topic, but stories create emotional responses and empathy that generates a longer lasting understanding of not just what happened but how it affected the teller. The Messenger powerfully provokes emotional responses to the stories it shares, some of anger, grief, understanding, and inspiration.

inspired in part by Georgia Gabor, a math teacher and a Jewish Holocaust survivor who tells students in Pasadena California about her experiences in WWII. Georgia is played expertly by Laura Esping and her retellings to her students of her experiences are harrowing. Espings performance displays an understanding of the characters mindset. She has survived and she has made it a point to share her story wherever and whenever she can. She does not breakdown or get emotional, she is teaching, she tells her truths in a way that conveys the gravity of what her words mean and to ensure understanding. Her accent is also superbly done. Her story is intertwined with that of Angela, played by Tracey Maloney, who is a helicopter parent in 1993. She starts a petition when she learns that Georgia is telling her students about her experiences during and after the war. Maloney perfectly captures the clueless entitlement and dangerous censorship masquerading as parental protectiveness. Maloney’s performance success can be measured by how much she makes your skin crawl, mine almost made it off my body and out of the theater. She is absolutely chilling in her cheerfulness.

Julia Isabel Diaz plays Gracie an archivist at a museum in 1969 who discovers some documents that are not catalogued that throw an unflattering light on a U.S. WWII General. Her employers do not want the document to be put forward despite its historical importance. The rationale is why tarnish the good name of an American hero? Gracie loves her job and Diaz lays the groundwork in her initial scenes which are about her initial internship and then being hired, the enthusiasm is a stark contrast to the emotional turmoil she displays later when it is made clear that she has a bright future at the museum if she just buries the documents. Ashley Horiuchi plays the final character Annie, a young asian woman who is also linked with the museum, but in 2020 as a student volunteer. Horiuchi is very believable as a fifteen year old teenager in a grade conscious Pasadena school. Her character starts of with the kind of attitude that makes those of us who were or are parents of teenagers role our eyes in recognition. There is also a sort of defensive mean girl aspect to the character that eventually is broken down. She allows us to come to a understanding of the girls feelings and emotions, taking us from eye rolls to sympathy. When she is witness to and involved in an act of prejudice she stays silent. The message of the play and of these characters in particular is that silence allows hate to flourish. What is important with these characters is it makes the situations in which Gracie and Annie remain silent understandable, we can comprehend why they keep silent, making them sympathetic characters, but it also wisely shows us the price of their silence on their mental state and the world around them.

When I was in school we learned that we study history because if we don’t do so and learn from it, that history will repeat itself. As we look around our world today we can see the truth in that lesson. What is the cause? Why did we not learn from the past? Is it the Mothers who didn’t want their children to know about the atrocities of the past? In saving their children the discomfort of facing some ugly facts did the doom all of society to repeat our darkest hours. Did they contribute to the downfall of our educational system with their over protectiveness creating generations that don’t really grasp what happened and why? Or is it that we hid things that we thought would embarrass us as a nation, thinking they didn’t really matter. Not knowing that to confront all of our darkest moments was the only way to stay in the light? Or is it the silence of fear, the advice given to many to keep your head down, ignore the hate and it will go away. But it doesn’t go away, it only grows stronger when you are not watching it.

The Messenger is probably the most important play you will see this year and I wish I could enforce the “will see” of that sentence. For those of you turned off by the dark subject matter, know that it is dark but it is also very illuminating. It’s not a fun show, but it also isn’t a difficult show to sit through, it is very rewarding and helps clarify the reality of hate and how it spreads. With that understanding we can hopefully be better about finding ways to fight back against the encroaching darkness. The Effect at the Jungle Theater

The Effect is brilliant at smuggling in multiple ideas within a 90 minute entertaining story. It’s one of my favorite types of plays, I don’t mean 90 minutes no intermission, but that is always a plus. What I’m referring to is a play that tackles serious or thought provoking themes, but does it with humor and an emotional story that we as an audience can connect with. Written by Lucy Prebble,The Effect follows two test subjects, Tristan and Connie, for a clinical trial of a new antidepressant medication. When the two begin to develop feelings for each they are uncertain whether the feelings are real or actually a side effect of the medication. We also Follow the story of those conducting the trial Dr. Lorna James and Dr. Toby Sealey, who have a complicated past. The play is designed to bring up a lot of questions that it doesn’t answer, which is great, because they don’t have definitive answers, they are questions calculated to make us think. It makes us think about Love, Drugs, Depression, guilt, bias, responsability, connection, and morality. It’s also really quite funny and charming.

Kamani Graham who plays Tristan is not someone I’ve seen before but I hope to see a lot more of. Graham creates an easy rapport with Becca Claire Hart who plays Connie, drawing the more reserved Connie out with his humor and carefree approach to life. Hart does a great job of showing us Connie’s guarded nature, her tendency to overthink every situation. The two play their characters so well that it’s very easy to believe that their attraction as they both embody a quality the other lacks but could maybe use a little of. Dr. Lorna James is played by The Jungle Theater’s Artistic Director Christina Baldwin and Dr. Toby Sealey is portrayed by Greg Watanabe. Baldwin plays her character as strong and in control, but by the end reveals her to be perhaps the most fragile of the four. Watanabe brings a likeability that is key to making his character more than just a representative of big pharm, he isn’t supposed to just be a stand in for a villain, he’s meant to represent someone who is trying to do their best in an imperfect world. He has faults, but he also cares.

Technically the show is very accomplished, from the set design by Benjamin Olsen to the Costumes by Sarah Bahr which have an authentic clinical feel. But what really worked very well is the Projections which were designed by Leslie Ritenour. Throughout the play we get everything from messages like “Dosage increase to 100mg” to brain scan images. We also get these abstract images that look like chemical reactions in the brains which just really helped to convey what was happening between Tristan and Connie.

Groucho Marx Meets T.S. Eliot Has its World Premiere at Illusion Theater

Groucho Marx Meets T.S. Eliot is a play by local playwright Jeffrey Hatcher that dramatizes a dinner between pen pals Groucho Marx and T.S. Eliot. Although that sounds way more straight forward than this play actually is. What we get is multiple versions of the evening in which they try it as Groucho’s game show You Bet Your Life, or as a scene from one of the Marx Brothers movies. Like a Marx Brothers film you are never sure where this play will go next. The topics range from old Groucho routines to a debate about whether T.S. Eliot was antisemitic. There is discussion about breaking the fourth wall and then there is breaking the fourth wall. There are a couple of short songs performed and we even get appearances from the You Bet Your Life ducks. It’s laugh out loud funny at times and actually raises some interesting thoughts about issues such as copyright law and happiness. Hatcher crams an awful lot into a brisk 75 minute runtime which flies by but also seems like the perfect length.

The cast consists of Jim Cunningham as Groucho Marx and John Middleton as T.S. Eliot. Let me start with Eliot because I know next to nothing about him and certainly had no idea what he looked or sounded like. I have seen Cats and was aware it was based on his poetry and I seem to have some recollection of his poem The Waste Land coming up in connection with The Great Gatsby. I’ve no idea if that connection is real or imagined to be honest, it’s a memory from about 40 years ago. So Middleton had a lot of leeway to do what he wanted and if the narrative is accurate in terms of his character, he played it superbly. Middleton does a fantastic Chico Marx impression when he and Groucho reimagine the evening as the trial from Duck Soup.

Cunningham has an uphill battle against decades of familiarity with Groucho. I’ve seen all of the films, I’ve watched many YouTube videos of Groucho on talk shows, I used to watch rebroadcasts of his You Bet Your Life with my Dad as a teenager. I was in my twenties but my Dad like to pretend he was a teenager when we watched. It’s hard not to wish that Cunningham had gone a little further towards capturing the Groucho we all know. In every other respect he does a fine job, there are flashes of Groucho, which is a reasonable choice. He presents Groucho as a man who has come to meet someone and have dinner at their house, he gives a flash of performance to please Eliot and the audience but doesn’t want to play the “Groucho character” in his personal life. It’s a valid choice, but it’s not the one the audience is hoping for. Though perhaps the play doesn’t work if he goes the full Groucho?

Fans of either of these two 20th century legends will get a kick out of this what might have happened play. Groucho Marx Meets T.S.
