Still bummed about the first real snow of the season? Still smarting from the Loons’ loss in the division semifinals? Don’t dwell on icy roads, think about the fact that this means we may get a White Christmas! And hey, the new MLS season kicks off February 21st! But if you need help seeing past the disappointments, Mistletoe & Mayhem: The Hallmark Parody of the Season! is just the ticket to kickstart your holiday spirit.
Using the Hallmark Channel Christmas movie template as fodder for comedy isn’t new, but that’s perfectly fitting, because neither are the movies themselves. What matters is the execution. From past experience, I’ve learned that the script determines how successfully this concept lands. It can’t simply skewer one trope after another; it still needs its own story. Just Us Theater’s production, written by Jami Newstrom, not only delivers a story packed with laughs, it even positions itself beautifully for a sequel.
The story follows Victoria Steele, a cold-as-steel big city corporate executive sent to evaluate the town of Snowberry Falls as a potential site for an Evergreen Resort. There, she joins the town’s over-the-top holiday festivities and of course, slowly warms to the cheerfully aggressive Christmas spirit of a place that celebrates the holiday eleven months out of the year. The town is filled with colorful characters: Hank and Betty Evergreen, Grandma Twinkles Evergreen, Mayor Kringle, Carol, Joy, and Nick Evergreen, the handyman and Mr. December in the Holiday Hunk Calendar. As Victoria begins thawing in the glow of Nick’s holiday hunk energy, her smug city boyfriend Chad inconveniently arrives. By the final bow, Newstrom ties up all the main plot threads nicely…but leaves just the right mysteries dangling: What did Carol do to land on Betty’s naughty list? Why only eleven months of Christmas? And what’s the real story with Marzipan, the goat?
The cast is a delight. Dawn Krosnowski is technically polished as the hard edged businesswoman but wonderfully vulnerable as Snowberry Falls works its magic. Instead of acting annoyed by the town’s chaos, she plays amused disbelief, giving us a human being to root for rather than a stock caricature. Tim Uren and Sarah Broude are hilarious as Hank and Betty Evergreen (for a peek of them in character, check out the Stages of MN Holiday Preview episode: https://bit.ly/TSOMNEp21YouTube). One of my favorite moments comes courtesy of Uren’s Hank after sampling a fudge that’s been…unexpectedly microdosed. Sam Poppen’s Nick plays the straight man to the madness brilliantly, even while doing wonderfully silly bits like solemnly adding a log to the fire from his handyman toolbox.
Newstrom, who also directs and designed the production, nails the tone. It sits perfectly between impossibly ridiculous and genuinely sincere. The production design is impressively elaborate for the Phoenix Theater’s small space. The holiday excess feels intentional, curated, and festive, not like someone simply threw tinsel at every surface and hoped for the best.
Let’s make Mistletoe & Mayhem: The Hallmark Parody of the Season! a hit so big that Just Us Theater has to cash in next year with: Mistletoeier & Mayhemier 2: Return to Snowberry Falls! R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium is a show that I went to for nostalgic reasons fully expecting to be underwhelmed and I’m delighted to say I was pleasantly surprised. This was part of a day spent walking down memory lane with my oldest son Alex. We did a Phantom Double feature, hitting the matinee of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium at Park Square Theatre followed by the evening performance of The Phantom of the Opera at the Orpheum Theatre. Is R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium as good as The Phantom of the Opera musically or in any way? Of course not. Is that a fair comparison? Of course not! On the scale that this show is produced on, it is actually Really good.
This is a show that is geared towards tweens and teenagers, fans of the popular Goosebumps book series are it’s primary target. But the show with book and lyrics by John Maclay and lyrics, music, Orchestrations & arrangements by Danny Abosch doesn’t content itself with aiming solely for that demographic. It accomplishes what few shows geared towards that audience even seem to attempt, it is a rewarding and effective production for adults as well. My son Alex was a big collector of the Goosebumps books when he was younger his interest began before he was able to read the books on his own and so I do remember a few of the ones I read to him. But to be sure his interest in the books was as much for their covers and titles as it was for anything found on the pages.
While I never read the book this show is based on a quick look at the Goosebumps Wiki entry for the book #24 in the original book series indicates that it appears to be a fairly faithful adaptation. Brooke and Zeke, best friends and horror fans are excited to be cast as the leads of their school’s production of The Phantom. Brian, who’s new to the school and missed auditions is thrilled to at least help backstage. But when a masked figure begins haunting rehearsals and leaving threatening notes, the fun turns frightening fast. Determined to uncover the truth, Zeke, Brooke and Brian launch an investigation. Could the phantom be Tina, desperate to steal the lead role, or Emile, the odd night janitor who always seems to be lurking in the shadows? With opening night approaching, and Zeke being accused of backstage pranks and vandalism they must solve the mystery before the play becomes a real-life nightmare or is cancelled.
The show premiered in 2016 and I’m a bit surprised I haven’t seen it produced locally before. Park Square doesn’t list it as a Regional premiere so perhaps a school or community theater has produced it. I’m glad I got to see it at Park Square, but also a little surprised that Children’s Theatre Company or Stages Theatre Company hasn’t mounted a production.
This is a show that High schools should be putting on all over the country but I’m not sure I wanna sit through a high school production of this. What really made this entertaining was it’s very good cast and solid and effective production design. Jack Bechard plays Brian bringing a romantic lead vide to the show. Sophie La Fave plays Brooke with Jack Bonko as Zeke the two play off each other well, with Bonko providing clueless comedic relief throughout. Along with the three leads also very good in the cast are are Ani Tonoyan as Tina and Logan Lang as Emile.
R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium is one of those shows that you sort of go in expecting it to be underwritten and it isn’t, this is a tight script. And the songs are fun as well. It opens with the song “Goosebumps” which doesn’t start the plot of the show off but instead pays tribute to the series in general with all sorts of characters from the books making an appearance. The Costumes by Rebecca Gardner are great in particular the recreation of those classic Goosebumps characters for that opening number. The set design by Michaela Lochen seemed solid if unexceptional until we get to the sub basement of the auditorium, then I was truly impressed by what was sprung on us. There is a scene that takes place down there where Zeke, Brooke, and Brian are being pursued that Director Ellen Fenster-Gharib stages to make full use of the design, it’s creepy but also funny. With Karin Olson’s Lighting Design really helping to make that set atmospheric and adding a generally spooky element to many scenes. Lastly I do want to point out Choreographer Jack Moorman, who I assume also choreographed the fight scenes, which there are moments of sword combat that felt real, not the slowly timed and excruciatingly predictable blocking we usually get, it’s fast paced and feels dangerous.
If you were ever or have kids who are into Goosebumps this one should be high on your list of shows to see this holiday season as a bit of counter programing. R.L. This was part one of a Phantom double feature with my oldest son, Alex: Goosebumps at Park Square Theatre in the afternoon, followed by The Phantom of the Opera at the Orpheum that night. Is Goosebumps musically or theatrically on the same level as Phantom of the Opera? Of course not. Is that comparison fair? Absolutely not. On the scale it’s produced, this show is actually really good.

Impressively, it works for adults too. Alex was a massive Goosebumps collector growing up. The show isn’t underwritten the way you might expect, it’s a tight script with genuinely fun songs. It opens with the musical number “Goosebumps,” which doesn’t advance the plot but instead serves as a spooky, high energy tribute to the entire book franchise, featuring iconic Goosebumps monsters. Rebecca Gardner’s costumes shine here, especially in recreating those classic characters. Michaela Lochen’s set initially seemed functional but simple, until we descended into the auditorium sub-basement, where an impressive reveal transformed everything. Director Ellen Fenster-Gharib stages the chase sequence in that space brilliantly, it’s eerie, funny, and one of the highlights of the production. Karin Olson’s lighting enhances the chills throughout, and I also want to praise choreographer Jack Moorman, whose staging includes surprisingly convincing sword combat, which elevates the action beyond standard youth theater blocking.
If you loved Goosebumps as a kid or have kids who do now, this show should be high on your holiday theater list as some spooky counter programming. R.L. Day 10 brought the sad news that Jackdonkey Productions had to cancel their final performance of 503. Hopefully they will do a remount in the future. From what I heard from those who caught it, it’s too good not to be seen. We are hoping that Jeffrey Nolan is on the mend and want to share Jacdonkey’s venmo account with you which is @jackdonkeyprod. I know they would appreciate any donations to help offset the financial costs that went into producing a show that you weren’t able to perform. This is a young theater company with young Actors and artists in the company, I think that’s probably all I need to say to make you understand how much your donations would mean.
This was the penultimate day of the Fringe Festival. I’ll be seeing shows in the first two slots and the last slot tomorrow and then attending the closing night party. On that last day I’ll be trying to capture some quick sound bites of what everyone’s favorite show was and how many productions they saw. I’ll have fans and buttons with me to give out. If you are headed to Mixed Blood or Theatre in the Round tomorrow flag me down to get a fan, those venues in my experience can get rather warm, and the fans really help. Below read my reviews of all the shows I saw on day 10!
So I was able to catch MicroMedics after all. This improv show’s format is that we follow the adventures and loves of the MicroMedics, which are a crew of Doctors shrunk down to fight diseases inside of human bodies in their MicroMedic ship. Where Rec League is Improv at the top of its game with seasoned improv performers, this is younger performers who don’t always read what each other are putting down but get enough laughs to make it worth seeing. There are definitely some good performers in this group and it will be fun to watch them develop their skills over the coming years. The best part of the show might be their adorable and choreographed opening theme song and their outfits. I’m not gonna lie, I have a soft spot for Destiny Davison’s Dolly Who since first encountering the cartoonist character at the 2023 Minnesota Fringe Festival. Her offbeat sense of humor isn’t for everyone, but I kinda vibe to it. DOLLY WHO?’S HOLIDAY HORROR SHOW has Dolly hosting a show based on a holiday we all create together. It features her signature line drawn cartoon characters along with a host of invisible technicians who help put the show together. It’s chock full of bizarre lighting and sound effects, with Dolly seemingly as unsettled as we are by everything that is occuring. If you get Dolly, you’ll enjoy the show, if it isn’t your thing it may leave you cold. Another really cool thing for fans is she has all sorts of magnets, buttons, stickers and fun merch you can pick up if you enjoy her artwork as much as I do. Final Dress is another improv show, I should warn you, this was a big improv day for me with four of the seven shows I saw being improv ones. This one is the brainchild of Michael DallaValle & Sean Dillon who together are Dilly Dally. This one is supposedly the final dress rehearsal for a new play, each performance has a guest Director who walks the Actors through the show. The name of the play is up to the guest Director, for my performance they were directed by Duck Washington and the play was titled After the Goblin Wars. It’s improv so it’s always going to be different, but note to self and faithful readers next time you see that Dilly Dally is doing a show, get tickets. It’s the type of Fringe show where you wish you could see every performance. It’s such a great concept and they are both brilliant improvisors, and I’m sure it didn’t hurt that Washington is also an accomplished improvisor. But honestly, looking at the other four Directors they had lined up, I don’t think you could have gone wrong at any of the performances. The Temporary Tattoo Trio was a riot, plus I got inked, temporarily. This high energy show about three best friends named Tyler living their best lives as temporary tattoo artists and spending as much time as possible at the most beautiful place on earth, Wisconsin Dells. It takes an unexpected turn, and then another, and this ludicrously upbeat and silly show gets surprisingly real. It doesn’t get dark, and it doesn’t stop being funny. But the guys, like all good actors, commit to their characters and it makes all the difference. I don’t want to give anything away, but this was damn near a tie for The Fringe of the Day Award. But I promised myself I wasn’t going to be wishy washy and do ties this year. So I flipped a coin. Cabin Fever was improv show number three today and that’s about where I would rank it as well. It’s more successful than MicroMedics, but doesn’t quite reach the level of Final Dress and Dice of Destiny:Neon City, which wasthe final show of the day. This one is a reality show about lesbians who are dropped into a remote cabin in the woods for 6 weeks to see who will be chosen by Ashley, the girls they are all trying to woo. This is the final episode, so Ashley will chose the one she feels she has a love connection with. I’m not sure what reality shows to compare it to, as I’ve never watched any of these finding love shows like The Bachelor or Love Island, which I assume is what these are based on. It’s quite fun and the host, a drag queen named Buttercream, is really good. An Exorcism, Don’tcha Know? has demonic possession, Lutefisk, Bars (the bake sale kind not the alcohol serving kind), and Minnesotan accents as thick as a sixth grade english teachers eyebrows. This cross between the Church Basement Ladies and The Exorcist is a pretty gosh darn good time. Anyone that spent time in the Luthern church, which I have, will probably get an extra jolt of recognition out of the whole thing. But maybe Minnesota churches, particularly in smallish towns, are all more or less the same. The show trades heavily on the audience’s knowledge of the Minnesota caricature, and we all ate it up! Dice of Destiny: Neon City by The Bearded Company was the fourth Improv show of the day and is basically on exactly the same level as Final Dress. Final Dress is what I believe they call long form Improv, meaning the entire show is telling one story as opposed to a bunch of different little scenes that don’t necessarily fit together. So if that’s long form, I guess Dice of Destiny: Neon City is very long form Improv. You see, each of the five Fringe performances picks up the story where the last performance left off. So the five performances together make up one long story. Another show in which you wish you could see all five performances. The setup is a future world where the population is controled by a giant corporation through drugs. And the pair of 80’s style movie characters who try and save the future. The interesting twist aside from the serialized story is that it incorporates role playing. Not the playing of roles, though obviously they do that too, but they actually role a 20 sided dice to determine if their actions are successful or not. This is a well polished troop that has been performing locally for years. In the leads are the excellent Anna Tobin and Endometriosis: The Musical co-creator Maria Bartholdi. The launch of The Stages of MN YouTube channel is still over a month away. But I’m hard at work in developing what I hope will be an engaging new way to celebrate live theater. I want this to be a collaborative platform where I can engage with theatergoers and makers. With that in mind I’m sending out this request to you, faithful readers, if you or someone you know has experience writing music or songs I’m looking for something original to use as the Theme music for the show. Watch my latest video on YouTube for an idea of what I’m looking for.
I love the idea of having the show open with the something created by you whether you are a professional music and theater maker or just a novice fan of theater. I’m looking for something between 20 to 60 seconds, that I can use for the opening and closing of each episode. Like I say in the video anything goes, silly or serious, instrumental or with lyrics. Now more than ever in the wake of the most recent election and the hailstorm of stupidity and hate it has unleashed, theater companies need you and we need them. How do you write about this? That’s the first thing that I said when it was over. I think the best description I can give for theater folk is that it is super Fringey. But not everyone knows what that means and might think it has a negative connotation, it doesn’t. It’s almost like saying it’s unique, creative, or atypical of live theater, unless of course you are at a Fringe Festival, than something described as being very Fringey is very much like everything else, except probably completely different. Now that I’ve clarified that and used as many words as possible to do so, let me tell you the premise of the show. Two friends are trying to prove that an online quiz they took titled Which Middle Name of ‘Philip Seymour Hoffman’ are YOU? to which the answer is always Seymour. Of course it’ll also give the incorrect answer which is Seymoure, with an E at the end. Why do they want to prove this? Because the creator of the quiz Doug Pickle has threatened to cancel them unless they can prove that the answer of Seymoure actually appears. They have taken the quiz thousands of times and never been able to repeat the answer of Seymoure that they once got.
That is the set up, the punchline is the next 75 minutes which is spent racing around the theater having volunteers from the audience take the quiz. If that sounds like it would get boring or repetitive, fear not. The writers Jake Mierva and Danylo Loutchko who also perform the show along with their computer person Sarah Halverson, who can be seen folding laundry between quizes, have solved the repetition issue. Each time you take the quiz it’s completely different, but even more than the questions changing the humorous idea behind each round of questions changes. Not to give too much away but for example one round might be trivia questions about Philip Seymour Hoffman, the next might show you pictures and ask you what sound is this picture? The variety of the quizes along with the surprises that might come from the audiences answers is from where much hilarity ensues. For those who dread interactive shows, rest assured you have to raise your hand and volunteer, and you learn fairly quickly it’s a safe place to volunteer. There are also some side bits that get performed throughout the show between quizes which are clever. Like the repeated deliveries from Doug Pickle which taunt them, and motivational speeches when one of them starts feeling hopeless and wants to give up. Mierva and Loutchko’s manic energy alone is worth the time and price of admission.

The Rainmaker was written in the early 1950’s, set during the great depression, but feels incredibly modern in its approach to interpersonal relationships. The Curry family are losing cattle due to a drought when a Rainmaker comes by and offers to make it rain within 24 hours for $100. That’s the tagline but it’s not really what the play is about. The play is really about believing in yourself, the importance of hope and of having dreams. It’s about the ways in which those without dreams sometimes only see them as dangers, and the damage they can do to those around them in trying to protect them from dreams. I wasn’t sure what to expect, never having seen the play or the famous 1956 film starring Burt Lancaster and Katharine Hepburn, but what expectations I did have were completely off base. I thought it would be a serious drama about the depression and a con man who takes advantage of people down on their luck. Instead it’s a warm, funny, and inspirational work that connects to the audience as they characters strive to make connections to themselves.
Director Ben Thietje has brought together a fantastic cast, some familiar faces and a couple of new ones that were quite impressive. Eric Knutson, as the titular Rainmaker Bill Starbuck, may be a liar but he wants to believe everything he says. His entrance and first scene sets the tone, he is boundless in his quest to find the right line to reel in his prey. With arms outstretched he makes his pitch in the Curry living room as if he was in a large outdoor church meeting tent speaking to a crowd of hundreds. Knutson has the perfect amount of charm to sell the act and make us see the dreamer inside the con man. Nora Targonski-O’Brien is wonderfully subtle and raw as the daughter and sister Lizzie Curry whom her family is worried will never marry, and thus become an old maid. It reminds me of the line in It’s a Wonderful Life when Clarence tells George that if he were never born Mary becomes an old maid!! Like not getting married is the worst possible fate for a woman. It’s a comment on the times in which the play was set and written, but for all that in many other ways it feels very permissive and forward thinking. The entire cast is solid, but there were two performers that I’m not sure I’d really seen before that were both great in their roles. I want to mention them, so as to hopefully have their names stick in my mind so I can watch for them in upcoming productions. Samuel Burnham plays the eldest son and brother Noah Curry and Christopher D. Knutson who plays the Sheriff’s deputy, File. Where other actors need to go big for their roles, these two ground it in a reality, perfect for their characters.
Adding to the evenings entertainment is a wonderful set design by Justin Hooper, Lighting design by Alyssa Kraft, sound design by Corinne Steffens, and some nice costuming from Samantha Fromm Haddow. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Curry family and it’s script by N. Richard Nash seems as relevant and modern as something written today, seventy years later.
